A Brief History

Maserati was founded in 1914 by brothers, Ernesto, Carlo, Bindo, Ettore and Alfieri. One of the first Maseratis was used to win the Targa Florio in 1926 and from there, the brand began making performance cars specifically for racing.

The logo of the brand gets its inspiration from the Piazza Maggiore’s Fountain of Neptune. The logo was suggested by a family friend and it was seen as very appropriate for the carmaker, especially since vigor and strength is represented by Neptune. The statue also represents Bologna, the original home city of the company.

Citroen took over Maserati in 1968 and it was again sold to Fiat in 1993. Fiat again sold 50% of the company to Ferrari in 1997 and Marco Tencone was added as the head designer in 2009.

Some of the popular cars under the brand include the Alfieri, the 3500 FT, and the MC12. The Alfieri was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and production started in 2016. It’s a very successful, well received model and has a 4.7 L V8 engine with a six-speed transmission.

The MC12 is a two-seater, limited production sports car with a 6.0 L, V12 engine. Only 50 cars were produced and were used to signal Maserati's return after 37 years.
